CRUTECH: New ‘Compulsory Carry over’ Policy Sparks ‘Silent Revolt’

CRUTECH students are reacting to a new regulation which will have them sit left over examinations at the beginning of a new semester.
The decision, expected to enforce the February 15th resumption for old students of the institution, will take effect in the coming semester.
The University senate approved the postponement of all General Studies (GSS) examinations and some core papers in departments across the four campuses of the university, according to a statement issuedThursday by Gabriel Beshel, the University Registrar.
The new policy is management’s answer to the old problem of delayed resumption by returning students. Placing the final papers of the first semester examinations at the beginning of the second semester will be an incentive for early resumption, the authorities hope.
Having lost several months to internal strikes, the new semester has to kick in immediately if CRUTECH desire to honour the academic calendar.
But students disagree.
“It’s a silent revolt” says Ubi Ofem, (100L), “We can’t yell because the decision has already been made; we are just not happy about it.”
Mogu Stanley, (300L) concurs: “it’s not a decision that’ll go down well with any student anywhere. Less than two weeks to rest after examinations, that decision isn’t fair.”
Oyama Resameokim (100L), too, wasn’t pleased with the decision. “Postponing the examination is not the wisest decision they have made in a while. Now we have to think of examinations once we resume school. It’s just not considerate,” she said.
Since, assuming office as Vice-Chancellor in 2014, Prof. Anthony Owan-Enoh has introduce policies to better the institution, some of which have earned him praises from students populace while others have been deemed harsh, unrealistic and cruel.
Just recently, he placed a ban on the usual post-exam celebration by final year as the activity is often characterized by violence. However, for unspecified reasons, the VC backed down.
But faculty members appear to have embraced the new decision.
“Currently, CRUTECH is undergoing academic renovation,” stated an academic staff of the university who pleaded anonymity, “Strict policies have been put in place to ensure the process is clean and fair”.
All exams for the 2014/2015 academic session are supposed to end next Friday, while a time table for all postponed examination is due for publication on the 16th of February upon resumption for the new academic session.
Meanwhile, new students of the University are expected to commence registration on the 8thof February.
